Dual Interior Shade & Energy Curtains

Dual greenhouse shade systems closed against greenhouse trusses to let in light.

Interior greenhouse shade systems and greenhouse energy curtains give growers more versatility to protect crops and influence the greenhouse environment.

When used in the right circumstances, two interior curtain systems can outperform one for reducing energy consumption and enhancing greenhouse performance.

Growers in areas with high heating costs and those growing high-energy-input crops such as vegetables can benefit greatly from doubling-up on their greenhouse curtain systems.

Dual greenhouse curtain systems also prove valuable for situations requiring alternation between light abatement or complete blackout conditions and typical crop shading.

Here’s a great example of how a grower could use dual greenhouse shade systems to address different growing needs.

A dual greenhouse shading system includes one shade curtain with 50% light reduction and a second one with 10% light reduction. The 50% greenhouse shade curtain provides summer shading during the day while the 10% screen stays closed. When winter arrives, the grower opens the 10% screen during the day for extra insulation. At night, he/she also opens the 50% screen for two layers of insulation.

What Is Cavity Screening?

A cavity screening system consists of two greenhouse curtain systems that operate on the same drive installation, with a narrow gap, or cavity, between them.

This innovative design leverages the insulating properties of the trapped air pocket between the screens to deliver energy savings comparable to those achieved by traditional double-screen systems that require two drive systems.

Like dual greenhouse shade systems or dual greenhouse energy curtains, cavity screening serves as an excellent option for growers in colder growing zones where crops require lots of heat to thrive or for growers producing vegetables such as peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

They also work well for greenhouses that don’t have room for a second screen and drive system or where growers want to maximize truss space.

Depending on the greenhouse location, crops grown, condition and type of greenhouse, and other factors, growers can realize up to 75% in energy savings with the addition of cavity screening to a greenhouse that relies solely on a heating system and has no energy screening.

Greenhouses with an existing single energy screen can realize up to 25% energy savings by retrofitting with a second energy curtain.

Prospiant can retrofit a greenhouse with a cavity screening system using its existing drive system or install it in a new structure. The process takes an average of three weeks, depending on the scope of the project, the structures involved, and grower requirements.
